October 10th, 2009 | by claudiaadf |

The French minister of culture Frédéric Mitterrand announced the return of five paintings from the tomb of a dignitary of the eighteenth Egyptian dynasty (1550 - 1290 BC), located in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor (Egypt).

According to the chief of the National Council for Antiquities, Zahi Hawass, France would have bought in 2000 knowing that the works were stolen. That is the reason that led Hawass to archaeological sopsendere all collaboration with the Louvre, the Paris museum that still retains the works, until the return of the frescoes.

The National Scientific Committee of Museums of France, after the measure adopted by Cairo, has unanimously requested the return of the frescoes and the Louvre, according to statements by Minister Mitterand, seems strongly determined to return the paintings.

The French Ministry of Culture wanted, however, point out that the museum was not aware that the works had been put on the market illegally.
