And 'missing archaeologist Werner Johannowsky

January 5th, 2010 | by Benedict |

It was definitely a completely different type of argument that we wanted to start 2010. However, we are here to remember the figure of a man of archeology of the ancient guard of undoubted reputation and professionalism. Werner Johannowsky is not at his home in Naples, where he lived alone. To notice the deaths were the neighbors, who called the police.

The distinguished archaeologist, an official of the ministry for several retired, has cultivated his work and his passion until the last days. It was, in fact, a usual habit of meeting him in the libraries of archaeological capital of Campania, especially in the Library of the Ancient World Studies at the University L'Orientale. His was a constant presence at times more than other users of the library, which is indicative of what was ingrained in him the passion for archeology.

During his career, his studies were different, most of which has been involved in studies of ancient Campania, at whose office was ministerial employee. He began his work as an archaeologist in the Superintendence of Naples and Caserta, structure starting from the '60s in which he had occupied the province of Caserta and Capua Antica. In 1976 he was appointed Superintendent Archaeologist of the province of Salerno, Avellino and Benevento, a position he has held for ten years until 1986 when he was appointed by the Central Provincial Minister.

Johannowsky has produced an extensive bibliography, including contributions which include "Problems of classification and chronology of some proto-historic discoveries in Capua and Cales," still used today, "The Etruscans in Campania," i, "The Fasti of Hellenism and Romanization Campania ', not to mention the book "Materials of the Archaic period of Campania," and many others.

It 'a great loss for the bell and Italian Archaeology. It 'disappeared one example.

@ Enrico De Nicola: thanks for reporting. Although the reading was still mistake: the news we had procured some transport. Of course we have no doubt on the value of the character. Of course we have not, who knows what they think the Archaeological Superintendence of Salerno and Avellino, on whose website to date (January 7, 2010) have published a line on the disappearance of a former superintendent who has governed for ten years that office?

I very much regret his departure. I had worked with him and De Franciscis in 1969 in Punta Epitaph with friends when I discovered the famous statues. A discreet person available, a real gentleman.

I learned late in the news of his passing and I was really impressed. I saw him again after so many years in Piazza Dante in the month of July to mid-day with the usual bag full of cards and his spirit of happy child to enrich his immense knowledge and to write a work of Buccino. Talking to him gave him the opportunity to learn more quacosa again with the enthusiasm of a small child. I will miss!
