The National Museum reopens in Baghdad

February 23rd, 2009 | by Anne |

After nearly six years of closure, this morning, the Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki officially opened the National Museum in Baghdad.

The Museum of the most important in the world, sacked in April 2003 following the invasion of the multinational forces, holds the most valuable evidence of Mesopotamian civilization. Despite the numerous thefts, yet there are many artifacts from the excavations of the ancient city of Ur and Uruk, stored in the warehouses of Museum and exhibited in its halls.

The Museum is back to relive even virtually, thanks to the work of the Italian National Research Council and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who have supported the development of the Virtual Museum of Iraq.
